Golden Riviera is one of a suite of six online casinos operated by the Golden Group, originally based in Cyprus and now licensed from Antigua. Established in 2000, this online casino styles itself as the ‘home of the sophisticated gambler’, although how they can tell if you’re sat playing their games in gorgeous, bespoke eveningwear or a string vest and grubby Y-fronts we’ve no idea. Putting the marketing puff to one side, what Golden Riviera is home to is a popular, comprehensive online casino that has earned eCOGRA accreditation, endorsing it as a secure and reputable place to splash your cash.
Golden Riviera does have a main, English language, international website, but of far more interest to European casino players, and the subject of this review, is its dedicated online casinos for specific Euro territories. What’s immediately apparent is that Golden Riviera has not merely bashed-out a simple retread of the international site with the dollars changed to Euro signs. Kudos to Golden Riviera for making the effort to welcome its Euro-playing casino customers with a selection of sites customised to cater for the major European languages! Naturally as native Brits we headed into Golden Riviera’s UK adaptation of its casino and have to say it immediately appealed to our Anglo sensibilities in comparison to the main site, with a whiff of the classy cool we like about rival William Hill Casino, and a visual bias to the appeal of classic casino table games rather than the arcade noise and flashing lights of brash slots and poker machines. (This, of course, is not to say that the fun of such casino machines is ignored here!).

Whichever language variation of Golden Rivera’s site you choose, nice clear navigation makes a newcomer’s first visit very agreeable, ordering lots of well presented content in a logical way to smooth your path to getting to play, and answering most of the standard technical issues any online casino worth its salt has contingencies for. We say ‘most’, since we did notice the absence of a help menu and/ or FAQ covering some topics often explicitly covered at other Euro online casinos, for instance what happens if you are disconnected while playing. (As an aside there is an FAQ link tucked away on Golden Riviera’s international site, but this is silent on the example given too.) Of course, there is free and efficient customer support to answer such queries if they’re going to give you sleepless nights, plus we’re sure to earn its eCOGRA accreditation Golden Riviera has such eventualities covered to protect its players, but it’s always reassuring to see published content that answers these familiar concerns upfront.
The games at Golden Riviera’s Euro-biased online casinos are powered by the ever-popular Microgaming Viper software, which means you can be sure of a state-of-the-art experience with rich graphics and sound. The download casino isn’t a wildly demanding size, so even dial-up users shouldn’t be deterred from joining in the fun, and there is a ‘lite’ download option that offers four of this online casino’s games straight away with the facility to load the additional games in the background while you get on with your fun. In earlier reviews of Golden Riviera’s casino we did note that its selection of Slots and Video Poker appeared more limited than rival Viper-powered casinos such as Belle Rock and Ladbrokes, however the complement of machine games seems to have swelled over recent months and there should be something to tickle the fancy of even the fussiest of online casino connoisseurs.

A non-download Flash casino is also available at Golden Riviera if you’re after a ‘quickie’ or logging on from a PC that you can’t download the full casino software to, but we must (again) note that this doesn’t open the door to multi-platform support as we would hope, so non-Windows users who’ve read this far can fetch their coats now.
Real money players are well catered for with a variety of deposit options, and Golden Riviera do have a number of useful promotions beyond the usual Welcome Bonus to swell your account with some extra free bunce if you cover the wagering requirements. We did notice some criticism in an online forum of Golden Riviera’s wagering requirements while researching this review, but we can’t agree that they are particularly oppressive. Like every online casino there are always certain terms and conditions attached to payment of bonuses; you will be expected to wager a certain amount before any bonus can be cashed in and some games may be excluded from the wagering requirements – this is not unreasonable and Golden Riviera clearly publish the relevant terms, which also stand favourable comparison to its rivals in the Euro online casino market.

Golden Riviera should be commended for tailoring its product to create discrete, multi-lingual versions of its online casino to serve its European customers, and with its excellent smorgasbord of Microgaming Viper games to play and pay in Euros we think you’ll find this is a Riviera well worth taking the time to cruise.
