Poker is one of the all-time classic gambling card games. It belongs to a group of games called ‘vying games’ in which players hold a hand of fully or partially concealed cards and bet in to a central ‘pot’, which is won by whoever achieves the best hand, judged by reference to a fixed card ranking, or to a player who makes a last bet that no other player calls.
Poker is played in a number of variations, but can be broken down into three common genres:
Draw Poker
Players are dealt a hand of five or more cards, all concealed from their opponents. They can then substitute one or more cards in their hand through a fixed number of deals from the deck to form the best hand they can.
Stud Poker
Players are dealt their hands in stages, with some cards ‘blind’ and some ‘open’ to their opponents. Five Card Stud, Caribbean Stud and Three Card Stud are the types usually found at online casinos.
Community Card Poker Players build their hands from usually between two to four individually dealt cards and a pool of ‘community cards’ dealt face up for the use of all players. Texas Hold’em is an example of this style of Poker that’s also to be found at some online casinos.
Casino Pokers are played slightly differently in that a player will be betting against the house and looking to beat the casino’s dealer rather than other customers. Casino Pokers found online are usually either Stud or Community Card variations. You’ll find more details on the specific rules of the most common online variations by clicking the appropriate tabs above.
The Namer Of The Game It is commonly believed that the name of the game came from the French game Poque (itself derived from the Teutonic game and verb Pochen which can mean ‘to knock’ in German or ‘to brag’ in Dutch). Curiously it’s not so widely accepted that Poque or Pochen are the origins of the rules of modern Poker itself – that honour seems to go to a Persian game called As Nas, which may well have been carried west by Persian traders. There is also some shared gameplay with old European card games like Primero, Brelan and Bragg so it is possible that the modern Poker game that’s now so popular in online gambling is a rather pleasing mish-mash of these disparate sources. |
