Caribbean Stud Poker carries the highest house edge (5.22%) of the typical variations of Poker to be found at online casinos, and this figure assumes ‘perfect play’. Because of the relatively high house edge on this game it’s even more imperative to play with a strategy that will get you as close as possible to that.

The optimum strategy for achieving perfect play in Caribbean Stud Poker is pretty complex and unlikely to be something you’d be able to commit entirely to memory (or particularly want to because it would seem far from fun!), however there is a simplified set of rules that will get you close.

At its most basic a decent strategy that should apply to most hands are:

Always fold your hand if can’t even match the dealer’s minimum qualifying hand (A, K).

Always raise if you hold a single Pair or better

The complexity in the optimal Caribbean Stud strategy is in the situation that you are holding an Ace and King, due to the number of possible permutations. However, a simpler set of rules for this situation that is easy to remember, and will get you pretty darn close to the ‘perfect play’ all player strategies are aiming for, is as follows:

You hold an Ace and King. Raise if:

the dealer’s face-up card is one of the ‘qualifying’ cards i.e. an Ace or a King, and one of your other three cards is a Queen or Jack

the dealer’s face-up card is any card from a 2 to a Queen and it matches the rank of one of your other three cards.

the rank of the dealer’s face-up card does not feature in your hand, but your other three cards include a Queen and one other card that outranks it.

Follow this strategy and you can be sure you are playing with just about the best odds possible for Caribbean Stud Poker.
