POLIS ON A JOLLY |
| |
Whilst I am heartened to see politicians from over thirty countries getting their heads together to ponder and debate the appropriate way to regulate responsible online gaming (as opposed to the US Christian Right’s approach of sneaky back-door prohibition), was it entirely necessary for them to do it without requiring the pomp and circumstance of an International Summit at Ascot Racecourse?
Surely if our glorious leaders are truly ‘down with the kids’ and ‘in touch’ with the exciting leisure and communication opportunities of this new-fangled ‘information superhighway’ thingy they could sort this out in an online Web conference? They may be worried by the billions gambled online around the world, but I do hope they show equal concern for the outrageous cost to taxpayers and environmental damage of jetting in thirty dignitaries to have a ‘jolly good think’ about online gambling while enjoying highfalutin hospitality at a posh venue!
Now I wonder what odds Ladbrokes are offering on this summit concluding by just resolving to organize another summit in, say, Monte Carlo in a few months time to have an all-expenses-paid jolly - sorry - really, really sort things out there?
